01

China-Africa Cooperation

The China-Africa relationship is one of the most important and consequential in the world today. But the discourse on China and its role in Africa tends to alienate, de-centre even ignore voices at the centre of this complex, yet multi-faceted bilateral relationship.

The voices which are often mainstreamed on China-Africa issues often lack the nuance needed to appreciate the complexities and peculiarities of how China and the Global South relate.

As a result, the discourse on China in Africa, and Africa in China tends to be presented or characterized in simplistic, jingoistic narratives such as ‘debt-trap diplomacy’ but also erroneously portrayed as great power rivalry where powerful countries flex for control and influence. It Is framed only in economic terms and as a small-against-big scenario.

02

Belt and Road Initiative

Now a decade old, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by President Xi Jinping in 2013 is arguably the largest and most impactful infrastructure and connectivity project of the 21st century especially in the Global South.

With an investment surpassing $1 trillion to date, the BRI has been a pivotal force in infrastructure development in emerging economies, giving them railroads, ports, power projects and telecom and internet infrastructure.

The entry of the G7's Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investment and the EU’s Global Gateway into the infrastructure-building race gives developing countries even more options. Our research and insights track the evolution of the BRI and its impact in infrastructure-starved countries as the program embarks on its second decade.

03

South-South Cooperation

In the search for a shared future and multipolarism, developing countries need to share knowledge and development experiences. AfIBR think tank also produces new research and enables constant communication among the south countries.

The global South nations have similar challenges and bottlenecks hindering their development, it is therefore important to keep sharing new ideas on how to overcome them.

04

Uganda-China Cooperation

In 2019, China and Uganda elevated their bilateral ties to the level of Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership.

China-Uganda ties are deep and multi-faceted. Our work checks the pulse of this important bilateral relationship and seeks to advance and promote an understanding of this dynamic cooperation.
